Consultative sessions for students

Consultative sessions for students

Any JU undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral student may make an appointment for a consultative session at the JU Accessibility Centre (JU AC) when they feel that the health or psycho-physical situation they are in is affecting their studies.

To make an appointment for a consultative session at the JU AC, please complete: Registration Form: JU AC consultative session for students

Once you have completed the form, you should expect to be contacted by the JU AC. Consultative sessions can take place either remotely or onsite.

What does the consultative session look like?

Stage 1: Discussing the situation

An educational process accessibility specialist will ask you to describe your academic and health situation. This is a good opportunity to describe your difficulties experienced at university. The consultation takes place without a third party, and confidentiality is ensured regarding the health information you will be willing to provide. The medical records you provide will not be shared outside the AC.

Stage 2: Selection of solutions

Depending on your particular situation, these may include reasonable accommodations to the study process, the assignment of an educational assistant or granting of a dean’s leave. If you have ideas as to what solutions would work for you (e.g. you used similar ones in secondary school), you can talk about them. If you do not yet know what would work in your particular situation, the educational process accessibility specialist will help you find suitable accommodations to your course of study .
All cases are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Solutions are selected according to real reported needs confirmed by specialist documentation (e.g. a disability certificate, a medical certificate or an opinion from a psychological-educational counselling centre). The aim of the applied solution is to ensure equal educational opportunities and adapt the educational process accordingly. No solution may involve lowering the content-related criteria, however.

Stage 3: Formal procedure

The educational process accessibility specialist will explain to you what you need to do to apply for specific solutions. All cases can now be processed electronically - you can do this using your own equipment or an AC computer after logging in to your account in the student.uj.edu.pl domain.

Any application you submit must be preceded by a consultative session. In non-standard or more complex situations, the educational process accessibility specialist may ask you to attend two or more such sessions and/or to provide additional documentation describing the implications of your health-related situation.

What do educational process accessibility specialists do?

Specialists working at the AC are individuals whose role is to support you in the process of obtaining an accommodation of the educational process. During a face-to-face meeting or via MS Teams - always in a confidential setting - you can talk to the specialist about your health difficulties, your situation at the university, and your concerns about meeting your study obligations. The educational process accessibility specialist will, if necessary, ask you to describe in more detail how the symptoms you are experiencing are affecting your performance in course meetings and during examinations. He or she may also ask you about the specifics of individual courses, course completion criteria and your learning outcomes.

With all this information, the specialist will be able to advise you on solutions that will take into account your different needs and at the same time allow you to follow your study programme. Each AC specialist has psychological and pedagogical competences, knowledge of special needs and disabilities, and is familiar with the legal regulations in force at the JU. If necessary, he or she can seek additional information directly from your institute, from the faculty authorities or liaise with teachers delivering courses on your specific university programme.
