Individual evacuation plans

Individual evacuation plans

The Jagiellonian University is running a pilot project to create Individual Evacuation Plans for persons with specific needs. The creation of such plans will help develop a deeper understanding of the needs of persons with disabilities in the area of safety in emergencies, and allow us to respond to the specific needs of individuals as well as to create more effective standardised approaches.

An individual evacuation plan (IEP) is a solution modelled on standard methods that have proven successful in, for example, the United States or the United Kingdom. There, it is often prepared by HR and the facility manager in cooperation with the person with a disability. In Polish care facilities for persons with disabilities, individual rescue plans are prepared and evacuation charts are created on the basis of these plans.

The IEPs prepared at the Jagiellonian University are information for those responsible for organising assistance, developed on the basis of an interview with the person in need of support during the evacuation. The IPE contains details that make it possible to prepare in advance for professional response to individual needs. This allows for planning equipment purchases taking into account individual needs (e.g. an extra chair) preparing additional resources (e.g. identifying and training wardens).

An IEP provides information on standard behaviour, which is supplemented by the expectations and needs of the individual with a disability. Creating it allows for procuring the necessary equipment and training staff in advance, as well as securing resources that are not anticipated in the standard procedure (e.g. specific equipment, additional designated wardens, additional signage, additional training). It also provides extremely valuable information in the form of an indication of where a person requiring support may be located when an evacuation alarm is sounded. People who use different buildings should have IEPs prepared separately for each of them.

All interested are invited to contact us and request an IEP.
