Adaptation of teaching materials

Adaptation of teaching materials

Jagiellonian University students with specific needs in terms of access to teaching materials are invited to refer to the Academic Digital Library collection and the Hamlet programme. The offer is aimed at those whose specific needs make it difficult or impossible to use the resources of classical libraries in a standard form.

Academic Digital Library (Polish acronym: ABC)

To gain access to the ABC, you should:

  1. contact an education accessibility specialist
  2. present a current certificate of major or moderate disability with an O or R code
  3. register at www.abc.uw.edu.pl
  4. once your account has been verified, an AC staff member will notify you by e-mail
  5. use the library resources

The library contains several thousand items from various fields of knowledge adapted to the needs of blind and visually impaired persons. The books made available are downloadable online mainly in text form. Free use of the Academic Digital Library is possible under an agreement signed between the Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw.

The library is the result of the project ‘Education, disability, information and technology: removing barriers to access to education for persons with disabilities’. IT specialists from the JU DSS (now AC) were involved in the creation of the library. Currently, the Jagiellonian University pays for the maintenance of its resources every year so that students can enjoy permanent access to the educational materials published there.

The Hamlet programme

To use the programme, you need to:

  1. describe your needs for adaptation of materials to the education accessibility specialist
  2. provide documentation (e.g. dyslexia certificate, attestation from a physician, disability certificate)
  3. become familiar with the rules of the programme and sign the application form for the academic year in question
  4. provide the programme coordinator with the materials that require adaptation

The monthly limit for adaptations is:

  • 1,000 scanned pages or
  • 200 pages of uncomplicated text (i.e. books without a large number of photographs, tables, diagrams) or
  • 100 pages of difficult text (i.e. language textbooks, scans of poor quality, books with a large number of footnotes, photographs requiring description or tables),
  • 50 pages of very difficult text (i.e. material whose adaptation requires consultation with a specialist in the field, e.g. sciences, oriental philologies) and 5 tactile graphics and 10 graphic descriptions. The degree of difficulty of the material will be determined by the learning material adaptation team coordinator.
Non-standard situations will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

You are warmly welcome!
